Sabrina Cristy - Spinal muscular atrophy (Brazil) Post on November 09, 2011

Name: Sabrina Cristy
Sex: Female
Country: Brazil
Age: 6
Diagnosis: Spinal muscular atrophy
Admission Date: 2011-09-24
Days Admitted to the Hospital: 28

When Sabrina was one year old, she was unable to stand and had swallowing and speaking difficulties. Her parents brought her to the local hospital where she received an electromyography of her arms and legs and also had DNA testing done. The EMG examination suggested neurogenic damage. The examination of the DNA showed that Sabrina lacked the SMN1 gene, and that there were 2 SMN2 genes. She was diagnosed with Spinal muscular atrophy and received rehabilitation training, but there was not much improvement to her condition. Sabrina could walk with assistance when she was 2 years old, but her walking was unstable and she had an unusual walking gait. Eventually the walking difficulties increased and the symptoms spread to both arms, after further rehabilitation training proved to be ineffective.
When Sabrina was first admitted to Wu Stem Cells Medical center, her appetite was poor and she had difficulty turning over, standing and walking unassisted.

During the examination of the nervous system, Sabrina was alert, and her speech was fluent. The vision and visual field were normal. The muscle strength of the proximal-ends of both arms and legs was level 3+. The muscle strength of the distal-ends of the legs was level 2. Both legs had difficulty with the adduction and abduction movements. There was muscle atrophy throughout the arms, legs, deltoids and the muscles in the torso region. The muscle tone of all four limbs was slightly reduced. The biceps reflexes of both arms were elicited normally. The bilateral radial periosteal reflex was weak. The bilateral patellar reflex was diminished. The Achilles tendon reflex was elicited normally. The bilateral Hoffmann's sign was negative; the bilateral Babinski's sign was negative. Sabrina was able to complete the finger-to-nose-test, rapid rotation test and the digit opposition test in a stable manner. She had difficulty with the heel-knee-shin test.

After the completion of the autologous stem cell treatment, Sabrina's appetite improved and she was able to sit up and get up more easily without assistance. The walking posture is more normal. The muscle strength of both arms and legs has increased. The muscle strength is level 4-. The muscle strength of the distal-end of both legs has increased. The muscle strength is level 3+. The legs are able to do the adduction and abduction movements more easily. The fine movements in both hands are more flexible now.

Sabrina Cristy is satisfied with the therapy effect. He say thanks to all the staffs of Wu Stem Cells Medical Center, especially for the doctors.
